From the moment a baby is born they have the ability to self soothe. We need to allow them that ability. Most parents are a fluttering mess of how to make the baby happy. How much to feed the baby? How much should the baby sleep? Why does the baby cry so much? When will the baby sleep through the night. What if the baby suffers from SIDS? So many worries!
There are answers to these questions but first I need to tell you the most important questions and the answers. 1: How much should I feed the baby. An infant will eat every 2-3 hours. And the amount will range between 2-8 oz depending on age. 2: How often should I change the baby? After every feeding and as often as needed. How do I get my baby to sleep? Your baby needs to learn how to self soothe. I would say by age 4 mths an infant can start soothing themselves to sleep like a pro. As long as you allow them . Use your feeding time as a bonding time. Bath time as a bonding time. Then bed time. A good time is 7 pm. Get your baby all dry comfy and warm and place your baby in bed alone, no toys, no blankets. A nightgown sack is amazing!! Your infant should be tired at this time and well fed and that means they are ready for sleep. A time to grow their brain and a time to grow their body and refresh.
Nap times during the day are a great time to prep for bed skills. And bonus you are not exhausted during the day compared to evenings. When you know your baby is ready for nap place them in bed alone and let them sooth themselves. This is a skill that most babies need to learn. I always find it very helpful to swaddle with a very light swaddling blanket wrapped tight like a burrito and during the day you will be able to keep an eye on the baby to be certain the baby is safe with the swaddling blanket. Check on the baby every 15 minutes visually.
If you stay consistent I promise the child will learn. They will love bed time and so will you . Only if you stay consistent. Chili love structure. It makes them feel safe knowing what comes next.
