Many parents often struggle to find ways to make an income while they raise their child. If you do not want to bring your child to daycare and you choose to stay home with them how do you earn extra spending money. Perhaps you still need to contribute to the financial gain of your household or perhaps you are a single parent.
My immediate idea was to stay home with my children and that was an easy decision because I was already in the child care field. I knew that it was crazy to go to work to care and teach other children when I could stay home and do the same thing while raising my children. I believe I discussed this process in an earlier post. So, I opened my own in home daycare and was registered through the state.
While being a stay at home mom and also running a business or two or three I explored many options on making extra income. I was desperately trying to find a way to make it work from selling Mary Kay to pyramid schemes that didn’t work even when I believed they would . I think my mistake was that I didn’t explore enough. I was afraid of taking risks !
I remember one hilarious attempt to make money from home was a craft that I was to create from materials sent to me. As a trial the company sent me the supplies to make one as kinda a test to see if I passed. It was an angel ornament. It seemed very simple. It wasn’t !!! I couldn’t get that angel to look good no matter what and I do have some artistic abilities. That was desperate times. I at least tried so better than not trying at all. This is how we learn.
Later I started blogging and documenting homesteading ideas. I also tried an attempt at youtube.
I now have an Airbnb. My husband decided he wanted to turn our shed into a tiny house. It was a hobby for him at first but he had great ideas. He used many reclaimed pieces to spruce it up and today you can find that shed on Airbnb listed as The Shed Tiny House in Oswego NY. We worked on this project for three years. We didn’t know anyone that had a tiny house and we didn’t know anyone that had an Airbnb. When we talked about our plan with our friends and family they seemed to think it was a wild idea. We wondered if they thought you e were crazy. All the while I kept my vision that the shed would make us money. We just hoped that others would love the space we created as much as we did. All the designs were ours. A compost toilet with a bathroom with newspaper walls. A loft with a mattress and a foot pump sink in the kitchen. It has been successful for a year now. We did close for our first summer because of Covid-19 to be safe. We created something far different than the hat most people ever think is feasible. I know many people build tiny homes but my point is that as a secondary income while staying home we were able to turn our shed into a five star Airbnb and we have a blast doing it. I also have decide now that many of the ideas that I have been using over the years are not typically used by many. Like the fact that I have made my own laundry soap for over ten years or that I make my own oat milk or that I do seed banking from the seeds I collect from the foods we eat. So I have decide to try to share these ideas by blogging. I am now working with an advertising company to place ads in my blog. Here you are reading my blog so thank you for making this grow. My ideas, my life and my business.
Currently I also have a shaving product that I am promoting. I designed my own website and marketing packaging design. As you can tell I’m pretty proud of this. You can check it out at https://shavemousse.square.site/
I often wonder if people think my head is in the clouds because I do not do things the way that others seems to be. The 9-5 work grind or corporate ladder. I like the unconventional ways. I have ideas and I feel like I want to try all of them. So far I have managed to be successful at a few and I just want others to know that you do not need to do things the same way as everyone else. You can be creative with the way you support your family. You may not have a shed you can turn into an Airbnb but you are you and if you put your mind to work I’m sure you can take one thing that you are passionate about and turn it into a profession. A way to make income or a way to add money to your household. Perfect example for you to try. Save your seeds and start a seed bank and sell seeds on Etsy. Paint with your creative expression or bake or make sweets to sell. There are so many ideas. I didn’t know about all these ideas when I was starting out and that’s why I’m sharing them with you.
