Has COVID-19 changed allergies?

For years we all have been told that our child’s sniffy stuffy nose was allergies. I’ve seen children go for days sometimes, weeks with a runny nose. Even to the point where it’s green. You bring your child to the doctor and she tells you your child has allergies. In most cases an allergy medicine is not even suggested.

Ask yourself this. If your child is suffering from allergies shouldn’t you have them tested? Most doctors will refer you to an allergist for your child around age 3 because the testing is a bit irritating. Just like in other situations you need to be an advocate for your child.

If you have been living this nightmare of allergies, have you noticed a change since you have been isolated at home? Have you noticed that your child is no longer suffering from terrible allergies? Did you find yourself not even getting out the nebulizer this year? I bet you typically would have had to use it 1-5 times in one winter season.

What changed? When covid times had us locked up our children were still exposed to allergies that we see every winter. Did allergies disappear? No!! My assumption is that it never was allergies. We as parents now have the ammunition needed to tell our pediatrician that our child may have something different than allergies. It may not help us too much this year but in the future think about how we have all been wearing masks . We have been staying away from large groups. We aren’t going many places. We hardly ever see anyone sick anymore. We live and sleep antibacterial products and we disinfect everything.  Could this be the reason for the change. I would bet money on it. I’ve found myself wondering how many parents are realizing this?

Let’s look at all the things that covid19 has taught us. Learning that our child’s allergies may not even exist or are much less severe than we originally thought is not the only thing we should be learning here!!
