As I grow older I realize how much I need to reprogram myself. Society as an American woman has taught me to just work as hard as I can to make money and always stay busy doing things. Then I question how is this healthy? How is this good for me? How do I feel? Am I overwhelmed? Yes!!! Do I have anxiety? Yes!!! So what does that tell me? That I am doing too much and I need to slow down.
This is something your children are seeing . They see how you function in your day and they learn from you.
How many of you teach your child meditation or another form of mindfullness? I cannot imagine the life our children could have if they grow up with this skill. I’m beginning to think that perhaps these skills that we can teach our children are extremely beneficial!! To the point that some schools are also implementing these skills in hopes of increasing awareness.
If you want your child to practice daily mediation or deep breathing exercises I would say two years old is perfect to start. I have done yoga with my groups of children and it becomes something they love and crave and ask for. It gets a little silly and that’s funny hat makes it fun. I incorporated animals with the yoga moves and they loved it even more .
Checking into children’s yoga classes is a great start. If you aren’t familiar with other yoga or deep breathing exercises or meditation you can find many links on YouTube that are free. Try to practice mindfulness with your child daily as if you NEED to do it for your body. Just like food because ya k ow what? It’s just as important. We just weren’t taught that here in Eastern America. Why? When it’s so important and all the research points to all the benefits? The only excuse I can give is that we have allowed that as a society. We have allowed ourselves to become a part of the rat race to try to be successful all the while over stressing ourselves.
Instead we have learned that if we are struggling and we are stressed it’s ok to go to the dr and get a prescription to calm us. Sometimes that is inevitable and I am not dir citing this towards pharmaceuticals but your body can do wonderful things for you if you teach it. Let’s teach our children to live life differently than we did. Let’s teach them that we need to take more time for ME because it’s essential. It is not a choice. If you allow it to be a choice most likely you won’t do it and you will end up feeling lousy. Instead teach your child it’s a part of the day and start each morning with loving yourself and taking me time then perhaps they will grow with this healthy habit. Just like you have taught them to brush their teeth. If you can’t find time in mornings make time later in the day. I promise you and your child will benefit.
