For a while now we have seen that non dairy milk has been growing in popularity. Everything from almond to pea milk has been hitting the market for those that want something other than dairy.
My three favorites are almond milk pea milk and oat milk. They are also my favorite to make. I grew up drinking soy milk because I was lactose intolerant. My mother thought this was the best choice as an alternative because it was on the market from a holistic retailer that she visited regularly. We honestly had a lot of goodies from her now that I look back. She was the early days of Whole Foods or Nature Time. Rice milk was a thing then also but I think everyone knew that you aren’t really gaining a ton of nutrition from rice milk.
When babies first start weening their children from the bottle or breast they often are guided to go towards whole milk. Many parents find their child cannot tolerate whole milk. Therefore we are forced to seek alternatives and that is what kept me in the dairy free path through these years. It wasn’t just me that had a belly that detested dairy, my lucky children gained that quality as well.
After years of buying different milks I realized their must be a healthier less expensive option and I knew I wanted to try to make it. I have a great recipe now to share with you and you will love it!! Chances are your kids will too because mine do. You can use it for cereal or oatmeal or smoothies and you aren’t going to get all the chemicals and preservatives that are in store bought mills.
You also will definitely save some cash. Who doesn’t want that.
Oat milk is my current favorite. Recipe is as follows:
1/3 cup oats
3 cups cold water
Blend in blender
Twice on high is good to avoid slimy milk
Strain in a milk bag
My favorite milk bag can be bought on Amazon.
You can throw out the solids you collect from straining your milk or you can save it for baking. Then add your strained liquid back to the blender and add some dates or honey to sweeten and a tsp of vanilla and a tsp of salt. And there you have oat milk. You can store it in an air tight container for five days in the fridge.
You can follow the same directions for almond and pea milk. Now you can enjoy some very inexpensive milk that is non dairy without added preservatives and sweeteners.
